Light Bulb Moment

Crazy times, right?  When things that are predictable in our lives become disrupted, it almost seems unexplainable. We expect certain things to happen. We expect the sun to come up every day.
Thankfully it does. We expect the car to start when we turn the key or push the button, depending on your level of technology. We expect the light to come on when we flip the switch. It has been that way for many years. Then that moment happens where the light doesn't come on. You just saw it working 5 minutes ago. Now it won't come on. We flip the switch on and off several times just to be sure, but it seems like the bulb has burnt out. When was that exact moment that the bulb stopped working? What caused it to quit giving light one more time? Scientists could explain the death of a light bulb, but the 'why' really isn't important to us. What is important is to replace the bulb with a new one so we can get back to "normal". Normal is flipping the switch and receiving light. If the light is out, we adapt by using the light on our phones or simply doing without the extra light, until we replace the bulb and restore the light we are used to seeing. We may implement a modification to normal, but we won't call the lack of light our new normal. We won't do without the light. We will restore normal as soon as we can.
Today we are in a state of uncertainty. We stay at home, and when we go out we wear a mask. We stay 6 feet apart from other people. We gather only in small groups. Businesses are closed. This has become our modification to normal.
We will, however, restore normal in our lives. It is impossible to maintain an economy where people stay 6 feet apart and restaurants only serve take out. We are not suited to live like that. People won't wear a mask for the rest of their lives. They just won't.
Just like the light bulb, at one point you will be wearing a mask, and then you won't be. When will that light bulb moment be for you?
The question for each person will be, what will it take for YOU to restore normal in your life? Will we wait for complete eradication of Covid-19? Is that even possible? Is it safe to restore normal now? It would seem that the plan to restore normal for most people is going to happen a few steps at a time. Maybe we can leave the house but maintain 6 feet and wear a mask.
If you don't have a restoration plan as a business owner you will be left behind. Are you going to wait for someone else to tell you when to act? Do you have a plan in place ready to go when it's time to act?
We need to develop expectations and goals using indicators. Using an indicator or qualifying event, we can plan our action to achieve our goals. In the case of the light bulb, we don't expect normal (light) until there is a new bulb installed. The new bulb installed is an indicator that light will be coming soon. When a new bulb is installed (indicator) we can flip the switch (action) and see light (goal achieved). What is your plan and what will be your indicator to start acting on that plan?
