I'm Offended

I think today more than ever we live in an apologetic country. I'm not going to go Donald Trump here but lets face it, we are a nation that is easily offended. Because we have become so sensitive to not offending people, we are programmed to apologize and make adjustments as to not offend anyone. Personally I don't really understand the feeling of being offended. I understand being hurt by someone's words. I understand not being in agreement with someone's statement and wanting to share my opposing opinion passionately, but what is all this fuss about being offended? I guess by definition being hurt by words or someone saying something you don't agree with is being offended, but somehow offended sounds kind of harsh, like it was a physical attack.
Words attack your mind. Your mind can turn it into a physical reaction, but that's on you. You can choose not to be mad. When you hear the news stories of our country's armed forces going on the offensive, you would hardly picture men and women yelling racist comments at the enemy. Going on the offensive gives an image of physical attack. One person's view of an issue can hardly be called an attack. It's called an opinion.

So what, you ask? I just think its time to tone it down a bit. Dial it back a few notches. Be prepared to debate using your intellect and words to make your point. Let's not crawl under a rock to give victory to someone else's words by crying "I'm offended" at every comment you don't agree with.

I say this now because that is how I look at life and how this blog will go. I'll be sure to say things people don't agree with, but maybe along the way instead of being offended we can enter into a debate. After all, most ignorant comments are made as a result of a lack of information. For me it's more important to get it right than to be right for the sake of not changing your view. If that were the case Christopher Columbus would have never set sail for the edge of the world.

I have no ambition to change the world, but I sure would like to change the way we look at it. If you don't think that's possible then...well...I'm offended!
